Until the Royal Canadian Mint opened in 1908, Canadian coins were imported from overseas. Even then, the designs and tools remained the domain of the Royal Mint in London while the Canadian facility operated as its Ottawa branch. This began to change in 1930 when the Mint became a wholly owned Canadian institution. Elizabeth II was crowned at the dawn of the television age and the splendour of t he ceremony reached hundreds of thousands of people in a way never before possible.
Similarily, modern air transportation enabled her to take on an unprecedented programme of visits throughout the Commonwealth, including Canada, which has welcomed her, together with The Duke of Edinburgh, some 30 times. In 1965, Elizabeth II proclaimed Canada's National Flag with its maple leaf design.
