On February 6, 1952, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the thrones of England and the six Commonwealth realms that recognized her as their head of state at that time, including Canada. As millions around the world watched her coronation in Westminster Abbey-the first televised British coronation-they could not know that they were witnessing the inauguration of a reign that would last well into the next millennium.

Today, Queen Elizabeth II is the reigning monarch of England and sixteen Commonwealth realms. She is also Head of the fifty-four-member Commonwealth of Nations.

The year 2012 marks the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II-a celebration around the world of the 60th anniversary of Her Majestys succession to the throne. Celebrations in Canada, as around the world, acknowledge Queen Elizabeth IIs lifetime dedication and service to her subjects, to the Commonwealth, and to innumerable charitable causes. Pure silver coin embedded with a Swarovski element. Double-effigy coin (reverse and obverse).

The Royal Cypher: A Sovereigns Monogram. A royal cypher is a monarchs identifier, much like a coat of arms. Cyphers have been used by British royals since the time of Henry VIII.

They generally feature the monarchs initial and titles, often beneath a symbol of rule, such as a crown. Unlike monograms that interweave letters, royal cyphers display each letter distinctly. Queen Elizabeth IIs monogram, EIIR, features her initials, E II (Elizabeth II), and her title initial, R (Regina, Latin for Queen), below an image of St. Edwards Crown which has been used for British coronations since the restoration of the monarchy and coronation of Charles II in 1661. The Royal Cypher is imprinted in the insignia of orders, decorations, medals and on badges.

In Canada-a constitutional monarchy that recognizes Her Majesty as its head of state-it is common for this cypher to be surrounded by a wreath or garland of maple leaves, symbolizing the unique union of the Queens power and the sovereignty of the Canadian people. Coin features the Official Diamond Jubilee Emblem for Canada.

Design approved by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Hand polished to proof perfection. A Young Princess Meets Her Prince.

Queen Elizabeth II, the first-born child of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, began her public life when she was a teenager. Her first radio address, broadcast from Windsor Castle in 1940, attested to her mettle even from the young age of fourteen, as she encouraged and comforted other children while bombs fell on London. It was at the age of thirteen, while accompanying her parents on a royal tour of Dartmouth Naval College in 1939, that Princess Elizabeth met the dashing young Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. The Lieutenant, five years her senior, was born a Prince of both Greece and Denmark, but his family had been exiled from Greece when he was a child.

As he escorted Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret around the Dartmouth campus, young Elizabeth fell in love. After more than five years of letter-writing throughout the war, Philip asked for Elizabeths hand in marriage in 1946. After War, A Time to Celebrate. After the bleak days of war, Princess Elizabeth's wedding captured the worlds imagination. The ceremony in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947, broadcast by radio to 200 million people around the world, was relatively modest out of respect for Britains war recovery effort.

Philip continued his naval career until Elizabeths coronation in 1952. In the years that followed, he became a patron of hundreds of charitable organizations. Today, he is Britain's longest-serving consort. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip have four children and eight grandchildren, and continue their lifelong partnership of mutual support and service to the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and numerous individual organizations and charities. The image is bordered by two decorative elements containing a shamrock, a (Tudor) rose, and a thistle (symbolic of the British Isles) as well as some maple leaves (symbolic of Canada).
