A very large celebratory goblet for the silver jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II. It was made by Webb Corbett and commissioned by Peter Jones China of Wakefield. It has hand etched details around the pontil area including the designers name (David Smith) and the engravers name Bryn Smith?? It is also numbered as No.
I have been trading in this type of item now for over 20 years and this is the first example of it's type I have ever seen, and I also can't find it in my reference works, as such it is likely a very rare piece. The scale makes it far too large to be practical as a drinking vessel and instead it is simply meant for display. It features the royal coat of arms and engraving of roses and thistles to symbolise England & Scotland, there is also the Jubilee date and crown. And yes, the coat of arms is mirrored as if you are supposed to view it from inside the glass - I have no idea why that would be, as an error it would seem very odd indeed. The quality of the engraving is quite superb and it would make a very fine display piece for a royal collection with the added interest of the mirrored coat of arms - see if anyone notices when it's on display! Very good order, some wear to the foot rim.
Height: 27.5 cm (10 7/8 inch). Width: 12.3 cm (4 7/8 inch) across rim. Weight: 2320 grams (before packing).
